Since October 2019, the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation has welcomed visitors to its permanent home in the vibrant neighborhood of Pangrati, in the heart of Athens. The new museum building, a refined blend of restored neoclassical architecture and contemporary design, stands as a cultural landmark dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Conceived to house the remarkable collection assembled by Basil and Elise Goulandris, the foundation reconnects the city with masterpieces of international and Greek art, fostering a dynamic dialogue between the urban environment and artistic expression.
The museum complex unfolds across eleven levels, combining historical character with modern functionality. Designed as an open and accessible cultural space, it features expansive exhibition galleries for its permanent collection and temporary shows, state-of-the-art conservation facilities, educational spaces, a fully equipped auditorium, a museum shop, and welcoming areas for visitors. A light-filled atrium and carefully articulated interior volumes guide the visitor experience, while a café and art library further enhance its role as a lively cultural hub. Through this thoughtfully designed environment, the foundation promotes engagement with art in a setting that bridges heritage and contemporary creativity.
